What’s in the Bag: A Day on the Mountain

By Published On: October 21st, 20180 Comments

When going up to the mountains or the local hills for an afternoon of skiing or snowboarding, it is extremely important to be prepared for any condition mother nature throws at you. This helpful guide will give you suggestions on what to pack and how to prepare to have the best day on the slopes!

Before you head out to the mountain, there are a few things you’ll want to think about. Of course, you’ll want to check the weather and from that, determine what you’ll ride, how long you’ll plan on riding, and how to appropriately layer. When it comes to other gear, though, you’ll want to take these necessities along with you.

Backpack

Possibly the most important piece of any in-bounds daypack is the backpack itself. A quality daypack is going to have straps to carry skis or a snowboard, exterior pockets for quick access to items, sternum and hip straps to keep it securely fastened to one’s back, and a slim ergonomic design that is not too bulky when lapping the lift.

Tools and Rub-on Wax

It’s important to be able to make adjustments on the go, and tighten things when necessary. Sometimes it can also benefit you to have rub-on wax in your bag, for those days when your board or skis just don’t want to seem to go.

Glove Liners

Helpful to have and wear underneath your gloves/mitts for added warmth, some even come with the ability of touchscreen compatibility on the liner. On super chilly days, they’re nice to have underneath, or as the day warms up, they can be great to wear on their own.

Hand Warmers

It is easy to toss in a couple hand warmers that can provide long-lasting heat, keep those hands happy for more laps.

Extra Socks

Socks tend to get sweaty throughout the day, so treat your feet to a nice clean and dry pair for après-ski and the drive home. Your feet will thank you!

Bag Lunch

Save money and cut down on trips into the lodge for a $20 burger, by packing a lunch. You’ll want to make sure the food you bring is substantial, calorie dense, and filling. While you hopefully brought enough food to feel full, it’s always a good idea to keep some cash in your bag for whatever else you might need.

Water Bottle

Stay hydrated when ripping powder and have something to sip on throughout the day, this is a must. It is extremely important to stay hydrated, especially during the strenuous physical activities of skiing and snowboarding. Keeping water on you can help to cut down on unnecessary trips to the lodge, maximizing your time on the mountain

Sunscreen

Everyone loves a good goggle tan, but not a burnt face. Take some sunscreen with you and don’t forget to apply every few hours. It can be simple to forget how easy it is to burn high up on the mountain with the reflection from the snow.

Lip Balm

Preferably with SPF, this small item can help protect against chapped lips in the windy, cold, and dry weather.

Extra Goggle Lens

Be prepared for both bluebird and overcast conditions, as weather can change quickly. To stay safe and keep comfortable, it’s important to change out your lens, so you can see the terrain and potential obstacles as clearly as possible.

External Phone Charger

On those extra cold days, this can be a lifesaver. Whether you’re out for three hours or eight, the cold will diminish your battery life, and this can help with that. Not just so you can keep snapping amazing picks and keep in touch with your buddies on the slopes, but also for emergency situations.

Beanie

Helmet hair is a real concern. Throw a beanie or cap in your bag to be as fresh off the hill as you are on it.

Sunglasses

Protect your eyes while going to and from the lot, without looking ridiculous in your goggles. Sunglasses are also helpful on warm days when wearing goggles gets too hot.

Bottom line, a daypack is perfect for a day at the resort, and depending on how it is packed can make your day the much more enjoyable, and enhance your ability to stay on the slopes for longer. Hopefully, these tips on packing your bag will help you in your snow adventures.
