Sometimes it’s obvious when you need to replace your ski gear due to damage. However, if you’ve been skiing for years with your own equipment, you may have started to ask yourself, how long does ski gear really last? And how important is it to stay up to date with replacing your gear? Let’s take a look at when a good time is to replace your skis, bindings, and ski boots

Skis

How long do skis last?

On average, a pair of skis will last about 8 years, but this depends on how often you ski every season. If you are going out every weekend, you may need to replace them sooner. This also depends on how well you take care of your skis, both on and off the slopes.

When to Replace

Some damages are obvious and will clearly affect your skiing, such as skis that are bent or snapped. However, less-obvious damages include rust, dents, nicked edges, or worn bases. Even though you may still technically be able to ski if your gear has any of these issues, it can negatively affect your performance along with how long your skis will continue to last, and may even be unsafe.

Why You May Want New Skis

In addition to wanting skis that offer better performance, one big reason why you should consider getting new skis is that new technology and features are being added to skis each and every year! If you’re using a pair of skis that are even a couple of years old, you are missing out on the latest features that can benefit you and make things a little easier. Newer skis can be lighter weight, have technology that helps reduce chatter at high speeds, perform better on icy runs, and more!

Another reason you might want new skis is if you’re progressing and want to ski on something that will keep up with your activity or matches the type of terrain you prefer. For example, if you’re a beginner is progressing to intermediate and started out on all-mountain skis but have found that you really prefer skiing in powder, then you should invest in a pair of powder skis that are geared more towards this specific type of skiing! The same thing goes for individuals who want to ski park, or just go faster and carve harder.

Bindings

How long do bindings last?

Bindings are a crucial part of your ski equipment, so this is something you’ll want to make sure stays in top shape. Bindings, like skis, typically last around 8 years on average. Most people will replace both their skis and bindings at the same time, so if you bought your current skis and bindings at the same time and are planning on purchasing new skis, it’s a good idea to buy new bindings as well.

When to Replace

Bindings will obviously need to be replaced if there are any visible cracks or broken components. They will also need to be replaced if they are indemnified, which means that the manufacturer no longer guarantees their safety. This is usually once bindings are around 10 years old. If you have any questions or concerns about your current bindings, be sure to consult with a ski technician at your local shop before you risk hitting the slopes on something that’s unsafe.

Why You May Want New Bindings

As stated before, if you’re purchasing new skis, it’s often a good idea to replace your bindings as well. However, you may also want a new set of bindings if you’re looking to replace your ski boots. Not all boots and bindings are compatible, so keep that in mind.

Ski Boots

Ski boots last around 200 days of wear. However, just like with skis, it depends on how well you take care of them as well as how they feel while you’re wearing them.

When to Replace

Like with skis and bindings, obvious problems such as cracks in the shell or broken buckles will need to be replaced. You will also want to be sure that the sole of your boot is still in decent shape, as well, since that is the part that snaps into your bindings.

The liner of your boot can also wear down, causing discomfort during your activity. While it’s possible to just replace the liner, if your liner is worn out, it’s a good sign that your boots need to be replaced as a whole.

Why You May Want New Ski Boots

One of the biggest reasons why people want new ski boots is that they want something more comfortable. Older ski boots may be uncomfortable not only from wear and tear, but also because they do not feature the latest technology. Every year, ski boots get better in terms of comfort, which is a good enough reason to replace yours every few years!
