For the longest time I feel like I have been in the dark, believing that Mt. Hood or Whistler was the only place you go to get your summer shred on. Well all of that has changed because this Sunday, May 26th Beartooth Basin will be Open. Formerly a private ski and snowboard camp, Beartooth Basin is now open to the public. That’s right! Now you don’t have to drive all way to the west coast to go snowboarding or skiing in the summer.
Beartooth Basin is located in the Rocky Mountains about 20 miles south of Red Lodge, MT on Highway 212, near the famous Beartooth Pass. Tickets are $45 for a Full Day, $35 for a Half Day and $20 for a Power Hour.
“New for 2013, due to federal budget cuts, the Wyoming side of the highway 212 will not be open until June 15. So you must access the Beartooth Basin Ski Area from the Montana side of the highway.”
Beartooth Basin Terrain:
With 900 feet of vertical drop and 600 acres Beartooth Basin offers vast variety of terrain. Featuring Bumps, GS Race Course, a Terrain Park and some of the Best Summer Backcountry Riding Around. Also, if you’re up for an adventure, you can always run some laps at Rock Creek and hitch a ride back to the top.
Accommodations and Camping:
Just a short drive away is small town of Red Lodge MT. There you can find all of the creature comforts of home. Such as: Bars, Restaurants, Wifi, Hotels and More. If you opt to stay in town make sure to stop by the Red Lodge Ales Brewing Company for a cool pint and some of their delicious food.
If you are a true outdoors men or women you can can always rough it and go camping. Between The Beartooth Basin and Red lodge there are tons o places to camp. Just remember to bring a warm sleeping bag and a good tent, because it not the unusual to get a little snow in June.
