Even more important than a limited edition graphic on your misty snowboard is a solid pair of snowboarding boots. They’re arguably the most critical component of your entire setup and can make or break your snowboarding experience. Brands like Burton, DC, K2, Ride, Thirty Two, Vans, Sapient and Salomon are constantly striving to make the most comfortable and highest performing boots boots at varying price points. Long gone are the days of aching, cramping feet with pressure points and hots spots after half a day of riding. If your boots hurt or are not comfortable, then it’s time to start shopping for a better fit.

What are Snowboarding Boots?

Snowboarding boots are considered soft boots with the exception of alpine snowboard boots which use a hard boot shell, similar to that of a ski boot. The primary purpose is to transfer the rider’s energy into the board, provide the rider with support and keep the rider’s feet warm. With direct contact to the rider’s feet, absolute comfort is paramount for maximum enjoyment on the mountain.

When shopping for snowboard boots, look for a good fit, flex and of course, aesthetics. When you feel good, you’ll have more confidence to ride better! Boots have varying features such as lacing styles, heat moldable liners, gel padding and an articulating cuff. The flex of the boot is most often chosen solely on preference. Some riders swear by stiff boots, while others wouldn’t touch ’em with a 10 foot pole. Keep in mind, however, that the flex of the board is often mirrored by the flex of the boot. In other words it might be more challenging to ride an extremely stiff board with a super soft boot. Check out the flex break down…

  • Soft Flex – A soft flexing boot feels like a skate shoe on snow. Soft and forgiving, they have plenty of play for fine tuning.
  • Mid Flex – Boots with a medium or mid flex have a perfect balance of flex and instant response for an all-round, versatile feel.
  • Stiff Flex – Stiff boots have performance driven construction intended for maximum response and stability.
