Our Favorite Skate Parks in Delaware

By Published On: January 31st, 20220 Comments

Delaware might not be the first state you think of when you think of skateboarding, but it’s no stranger to the sport either. With grassroots organizing movements funding many of its skateparks, Delaware is all about the local scene. Whether you’re looking for bowls and ramps or ledges and rails, these Delaware parks can match your riding style. From the big city of Newark to the Main Street of Smyrna, we’ve put together our top skate parks in Delaware.

But first…skate gear!

We can’t stress this enough – WEAR A HELMET. If Olympic skaters wear helmets and pads, so should you. Having the right gear also helps, from the deck to wheels and trucks to best fit your style. Having the right gear is important, but so is skate etiquette. Make sure to be smart at the park

Our Favorite Skate Parks in Delaware

  1. Glasgow Skate Park

Location: 2275 Pulaski Hwy, Newark, DE 19702
Cost: Free

Hours: Dawn to Dusk

Best for: Bowls and bikers

Kicking off our list is Glasgow Skate Park, located right in Newark. This free park is part of the larger Glasgow Regional Park and is open from sunrise to sunset. One of the most versatile parks in Delaware, skaters can ride fun boxes, rails, circular manual pads, and ledges. Glasgow also has two large bowls, steep banks, and several stairs for more experienced skaters.  Known for a legendary end of summer jam, it’s not uncommon to see BMX riders and scooters at this park.

  1. 7th Street Skatepark

Location: 1180 E 7th St, Wilmington, DE 19801

Cost: Free

Hours: Dawn to Dusk

Best for: DIY vibes, flat riders

One of the newest parks in Delaware is 7th Street Skate Park in Wilmington. This park was a long time coming, with nearly two decades of community advocacy finally securing the funds to build the park. This is a DIY park with volunteers helping construct it. That means there are plenty of unique features at this park, creating seriously fun flows. This is a grind-heavy park with rails and ledges of all shapes and sizes, as well as a few pipes. There are no bowls at this park, but there is a volcano, a euro gap, and several very fun banks. We like that this park is so wide open and spread out.

  1. Handloff Park Skate Spot

Location: 1100 Barksdale Rd, Newark, DE 19711

Cost: Free

Hours: Dawn to Dusk

Best for: All levels

Right on the border of Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania sits Handloff Park Skate Spot. This is a quiet little park which makes it great for beginners looking to learn how to drop in, navigate speed bumps, and stunt their stuff on a manny pad. That being said, don’t be surprised to see a local tearing it up on a quarter pipe.

  1. Newport Skatepark

Location: 103 E Ayre, St, Newport, DE 19804

Cost: $5 – $10

Hours: Wed – Fri: 4 – 8 pm; Weekends: 12 – 8 pm

Best for: Community vibes, kids

No Delaware skatepark list is complete without Newark Skatepark, the largest skatepark in the state. This park is owned and operated by Better Life Outreach Ministries, a 501-C3 non-profit. With a heavy emphasis on safety and community, the community vibes of this park stand out. Helmets are required and skating is supervised, making it a great spot for youth, teens, and adults.

This park is ramp heavy – with plenty of ramps at all skill levels. Skaters can try out various quarter pipes, spines, flat tops, and more. There is also plenty of seating for spectators!

  1. Smyrna Skatepark

Location: 502 N Main St, Smyrna, DE 19977

Cost: Free

Hours: Dawn to Dusk

Best for: Ramps

Just north of Dover is Smyrna Skatepark. This park has some seriously fun features including a series of quarter pipes, ramps, ledges, and rails. Everything is built on one big concrete slab, which means there are no bowls at this park at all. All the park features are elevated ramps, ledges, and rails. One thing we love about this park is the local scene, which even has its own Instagram page
