Let It Snow

See the forest for the snow-covered trees

Fall— or Autumn if you’re weird— is such a bummer of a season. You have to go back to school, girls start wearing sweaters, everything goes from green to brown, and the relentless assault of fresh snowboard videos poke and prod at your patience like the kid in your class raising his hand every other minute. Some people will claim that Fall is beautiful and that its the time for nature to put on its color show, but even noted naturalist John Muir agrees with me on this one:

You hear strange whisperings among the tree tops, as if the giants were taking counsel together. One after another, nodding and swaying, calling and replying, spreads the news, until all with one accord break forth into glorious song, welcoming the first grand snowstorm of the year

Well, luckily for snowboarders and John Muir, that first snowstorm is here— which means its time to scoop up the last minute deals on season passes to your local resort and get your snowboard gear all set up for another epic shred season. Colorado got a dusting a few weeks ago, and California’s Mammoth Mountain got some white stuff sticking to the higher elevations overnight. More is on the way for the Eastern Sierra, too, and some weathermen are calling for a winter storm advisory…in the first week of October.

Good news for us, bad news for leafers. Keep an eye on those local forecasts, and make sure you’re ready to ride when the clouds crawl into your county.
