7 Reasons to try Stand-Up Paddleboard Yoga

If you love the outdoors, water, and yoga, you are bound to love stand-up paddleboard yoga.  Besides taking your practice to a new level, SUP yoga will help you improve your balance, quiet your mind, and get in shape.  Best of all, it will allow you to see the water and the world in a whole new way. When the water becomes your studio and the paddleboard becomes your mat, new challenges and benefits arise.

7 Reasons to try SUP yoga:

1. It’s a great workout.
Yoga can be a great form of exercise on its own, but practicing it while you’re trying to balance can provide a whole new level of intensity. Plus, while you’re on your board, you’ll probably want to paddle around to scope out the calmest spot, which will give an added bonus to your workout.

2. It reduces the incessant chatter of the mind.
Yoga is all about mindfulness. Combine slow movements and intentional breathing with being surrounded by water and fresh air and you have the perfect recipe for calming your brain after a long, stressful day.

3. It boosts the immune system.
Exercise in general is a good way to give your immune system some extra support, but yoga poses and gentle movements can help prevent you from overworking yourself, especially if you’re feeling less than your best. Plus, you can’t beat working out in the sunshine to soak up some vitamin D.

4. It helps you refine your technique.
Yoga on a paddleboard is definitely more challenging than yoga done on the ground. This gives you the opportunity to put more focus into easier poses so that you can work on fine-tuning your technique.

5. It helps you increase your balance.
Because you likely don’t want to fall in the water, you’ll be using a lot of muscles you don’t normally use to stay balanced. This means that the next time you hit the mat, you’ll likely find it easier to balance in poses that you may have struggled with before.

6. It’s a perfect training activity for surfers, skiers, snowboarders and any outdoor enthusiasts.
Yoga targets so many different muscles—from your arms and shoulder to your legs and everything in between. That’s what makes it great for staying in shape all year long.

7. Most of all, it’s fun.
Especially if you go out with friends!
