Olympian Visits Afton Alps, Steals Hearts

Friday, October 4, 2013. The afternoon was overcast and cold, anticipation hung in the air like linen fresh from the wash bin. The base of Afton Alps Ski Resort was teeming with skiers young and old. Were they there to envision future shlooshing, schmearing, and carving only a few short weeks away? Possibly. Were they there for an electric boogaloo 80s style dance fight in the parking lot? Probably not. More than likely, they were there to see me…standing next to the only American woman to bag Olympic Gold in downhill, achieve four World Cup overall titles, and come away with 59 World Cup wins; none other than Minnesota Native Lindsey Vonn.

lindsey-vonnAfton Alps was recently purchased by Vail Resorts, becoming the 26th mountain in their new Epic Pass. To promote this and the 10 million dollar capital campaign Vail has in place for improvements to Afton; Vail Ski Ambassador and the Greatest American Skier of All Time, Lindsey Vonn visited with locals at the family oriented ski hill. Under the shadow of more than 70 new snowmaking guns recently acquired by Afton, Vonn met with children from Afton’s Development Team. She graciously signed autographs and took pictures with all the young racers then met with media before addressing the crowd of locals.

Ms. Vonn answered questions about being home and back at Afton,  rehabbing her knee after a devastating injury last season, and her goals for 2014. Very informative and very captivating. Yet, something was missing. What makes Lindsey Vonn, Lindsey Vonn? Sensing this void of pertinent information I pounced on the opportunity to discuss such pressing issues as early 90s hair design and prepubescent childhood sitcoms. Finally, the people would get answers to questions keeping them up at night. Finally, there would be peace of ski mind. Friday, October 4, 2013 will be a day that lives on forever. Pulitzer, Emmy; yes I expect these awards but is that the reason for such a hard hitting and fact finding interview? No. I am a man of the people and for the people. A man…of action.
