Duncombe killing it at last year's Maloof Cup
The X Games announced earlier this week that they will not be sitting idly by while Rob Dyrdek’s Street League swoops up all the top street skaters. This summer’s X Games 16 will debut an event called “Real Street.” The event is not so spectator friendly, as it consists of a collection of small video parts from skaters, and then they get voted on by judges to see who put together the best part. Judges Pat Duffy, Geoff Rowley, Jamie Thomas and Ed Templeton will choose the winners on-air during the X Games festivities.
The video parts will no doubt be epic, but can a video submission contest reach competitive levels seen in head-to-head competition? We’ll find out on August 1, when the panel reviews the videos, but we’re not to sure this type of contest will be a success. This type of model is more suited for a sponsor-me contest than that of a top-tier professional competition.
We’ll give credit where credit is due, though, and the rider list is looking pretty stacked, featuring some guys that only put out video parts and haven’t had new stuff in a while. Look for the likes of Leo Romero, Corey Duffel, Garrett Hill, Jake Duncombe (!), Nick Trapasso, and Tony Tave to try to become YouTube-like stars once more. Rounding out the competitors list is Luan Oliveira, Johnny Layton, Sierra Fellers, Zered Bassett and Tommy Sandoval.
Check out the X Games site for more info, rider bios, and video submissions as they come, and let us know what you think of the new format!
