Top 6 Cold Weather Shoes for Campus

By Published On: September 20th, 20180 Comments

The new semester is in full swing, and if any of these great young minds are like me in college, they will soon be wandering life-less across campus on a wintry night, wondering what they got themselves into as their tummies rumble for a steamy plate of mom’s home-cooked hot-dish (casserole for the non-Minnesotan readers). Well, it’s time to wipe those bloodshot eyes, my friends, because below I’ve listed my top 6 cold-weather shoes that will enable your midnight crisis walks to at least stay comfortable and warm.

6. Volcom Sub Zero Men’s Boots

Kicking off the list are the ever stylish Sub-Zero Boots from Volcom. There is a lot to love about these boots, but the first thing you notice is a rich, deep red with a gray sole and cuff that is not only stylish but pairs perfectly with denim jeans or chinos.

This boot rises up the ankle and tightens via laces so you have more coverage and protection from the elements. My favorite feature of the Sub Zero Boot is the leather body. The leather is not only super durable, but it retains heat well and is waterproof. So when you’re making your way to class and a patch of ice turns out to be a 5 in. slush puddle, you can rest easy knowing your stompers will stay dry.

What’s more is that these boots are super comfy. They are designed with a padded tongue and collar to avoid pinching, as well as an EVA heel strike with comfort foam footbed to cradle your feet as move along. Lastly, they feature a super durable rubber outsole with a chunky tread too so you can be confident walking over the rough icy terrain. Seriously, I love this boot.

5. Women’s Timberland Icon Collection Boots

Stepping in at number three are the Icon Collection Boots from Timberland. These women’s casual boots are truly one of the best out there. Known for durability, comfort and style, Timberland comes through as always with these top-of-line winter boots.

Sporting a high-top design for extra support and comfort around the ankle, these women’s boots are crafted using a super strong leather in a light wheat hue that will pair exceptionally well with a pair of jeans and a jacket; the perfect winter attire.

Each boot is lined with flannel and insulation to offer improved heat retention, and also features a padded leather collar that keeps you comfortable and prevents pinching. A rubber lug outsole makes these boots perfect for traversing harsh winter terrain, especially when you need to race across icy roads to make it to class. They are as pleasing to the eye as they are functional.

4. DVS Vanguard+ Men’s Skate Shoes

Next are the Vanguard+ Skate Shoes from DVS. One thing I love about these shoes is how it combines the sole and shoebed style of a skate shoe with the lacing and cuff of a hiking shoe. The combo makes for a unique design that pairs wonderfully with jeans and lets others know you love the outdoors as much as you love your style.

The interior is lined with flannel and additional padding that keeps your feet cozy warm in cold conditions and can be laced at the very top of the ankle cuff so you can create a tight seal over your entire foot.

The exterior features a durable cold-weather rated suede that not only retains heat well but also wicks away moisture to keep your feet dry in snow and slush. The sole is designed for winter conditions as well, so the next time you’re running late, you can literally run to class. Don’t want to miss that presentation.

3. Columbia Bahama PFG Women’s Boots

Sometimes traditional boots can get a little clunky. The thing I love about the Bahama PFG Boots from Columbia is that they maintain a subdued profile that is as sleek and stylish as any shoes while maintaining a classic boot look.

They rise a bit higher than your average boot for more warmth and support around the ankle and shin. Another great feature is the leather body, not only because it looks great, but it also retains heat better especially when paired with its lining. My favorite feature about these boots, however, is the waterproofing.

They sport a breathable seam-sealed membrane that will keep snow and slush from melting into the boot without trapping moisture inside and making your feet uncomfortable. Soft EVA foam supports each foot and keeps you comfortable when walking over uneven terrain. Pair these boots with jeans and a winter coat for a comfy winter look that is perfect for any campus commute.

2. Etnies Jefferson MTW Men’s Shoes

Just shy of first on the list is the Jefferson MTW Shoes from Etnies. These shoes are special because they give you the best of both worlds when it comes to style and functionality.

Crafted using a durable faux-leather, these shoes sport a sleek design in a light brown that pair perfectly with denim jeans and a jacket. What really sets them apart from the others in this list is that they feature a low-cut design that rises partially above the ankle. While I do love a good pair of high-tops like the other shoes here, it’s great to have to have a winter shoe option that’s a little different.

The faux-leather retains heat extremely well, and is reinforced with a fleece lining that will keep your toes warm at all times with quick-drying qualities should moisture get in. Cradling your foot is a soft EVA foam footbed and midsole that will enable you to comfortably strut over icy ruts and uneven snowfall. The rubber lug-tread outsole will keep you firmly on your feet, so you’re not walking on an wintery slip and slide every time you go outside.

1. Vans Sk8-Hi MTE Women’s Shoes

If there was a valedictorian for cold-weather shoes for campus, it would be the Sk8-Hi MTE Shoes from Vans. The shoes are one our most popular pairs here at The House, and for a good reason.

Simply put, these shoes give you everything you want out of a winter shoe while remaining completely compatible with nearly any outfit. Their sleek black profile pairs perfectly with jeans, chinos, joggers and anything else, and when paired with a jacket, you’ll have a complete look that is comfortable, warm and fashion forward. A high-top design provides warmth over the ankles as well as the feet and provides that extra bit of ankle support that is super helpful when traversing over icy paths, snow drifts, and rutty roads.

Made from a strong blend of suede and leather, these shoes are designed to last for years to come. An interior flannel lining adds to heat retention so you can count on your paws staying warm in some of the coldest weather. Reinforced toe caps and a vulcanized rubber sole ensure that you can trek over any terrain without sacrificing the shoe to wear and tear. If you’re not wearing these shoes this winter, you’re just doing it wrong. [Also available in Women’s.]
