When a a skater falls and the first point of contact with the ground is the rider’s hip, it’s called a hipper.  Nick Mullins got a hipper, which as many skaters know is very common.  Something wasn’t common about Nick’s hipper, with a break in the skin he incurred an infection, a staph infection.

Nick’s staph infection quickly spread to his heart, lungs, kidneys, and other organs; doctors gave him a 1% chance of survival.  The infection advanced to Nick’s eyes; it destroyed his right retina, and doctors saved what was left of his left eye.  However damage was done to the left eye and only a small peripheral triangle space can pick up slight color and light – leaving Nick legally blind.

This is Nick’s newest edit, published on April 21st, 2015.
