Ladies and Gentlemen, this month is breast cancer awareness month. I say “and gentlemen” because unfortunately guys are not immune to getting breast cancer. As the active and typically healthy people we are, sometimes we forget that cancer can happen to anyone at any point in our lives. As this is the month to talk about getting checked, living a healthy lifestyle and supporting others with breast cancer, I thought I’d write about Boarding for Breast Cancer.
Here at The House, we carry some gear that supports and donates to a super rad foundation known as Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC), a 501(c)3 non-profit. Boarding for Breast Cancer is a foundation that advocates for early detection, health, active lifestyles and cancer prevention. A little bit about B4BC:
“The inspiration for B4BC was a young woman named Monica Steward, who started her battle with breast cancer at the age of 26 and passed two years later of complications that arose from delayed diagnosis. B4BC’s founders – Lisa Hudson, Kathleen Gasperini, Dawn Kish, and pro-snowboarders Tina Basich and Shannon Dunn – hoped to honor their friend Moni by creating an event that centered around their passions of snowboarding and music while communicating the urgent importance of awareness and education” (www.b4bc.org/about).
Shortly after Moni passed away, Boarding for Breast Cancer hosted a snowboard and music festival in 1996 and received a huge amount of support from the action sports industry prompting them to host it again for the 6 years following. The one single event raised more than $500,000 that was given to beneficiaries that supported cancer research. Through the enormous turnout and donation amount raised, B4BC decided to take their Sierra-at-Tahoe event to other places around the country to raise money and awareness for breast cancer prevention and research.
In 2016, B4BC celebrated their 20th anniversary and still encourages athletes in the outdoor industry to live sustainable and healthy lifestyles. Many action sports industry companies have teamed up with Boarding for Breast Cancer to make products that support the mission of B4BC while also giving a percentage of money that is made from the special edition items to B4BC.
