Winter X Games Wrap Up

If you happened to turn on ESPN this weekend, you would have seen the X Games. If you were out snowboarding…lucky you! But now you probably keep hearing people talking about it in the lunchroom, at the water cooler, etc. Here’s the wrap up of snowboard events that went down on the slopes of Aspen last weekend.

Best Method: A great new addition to the line up that takes it back to the glory days of the grasser. This year’s inaugural event was taken by Mr. Scotty Lago, whose jaw is wired shut as tight as his method.

Big Air: Torstein Horgmo is pretty good, and he proved it again under the lights with a triple cork that was closer to a triple backflip really.

Snowboard Street: Also the best new event, street brought in stairs, concrete and metal, side-by-side for some of the best jibbers around. Nic Sauve came out on top, but the big news was how little JP Walker cared or even tried. His list of landed tricks….50-50 on the rail, surely enraging all the people who are better than him that would have actually tried. Oh, and Joey Sexton had the biggest cheering section and the biggest smile, even though he only beat JP.

Snowboard Slopestyle: If you’re old enough to drink, quit riding park, the podium was all teens with Seb Toots on top, Mack McMorris in 2nd and Tyler Flanagan in 3rd. Double-corks for everyone, all the way through.

Snowboard Real Street: Voted on by the masses and confirmed by the judges, Nic Sauve had the best video part (you heard it here first) full of oversize miller flips, massive wallrides, and the prettiest back three to bolts of the year.

Snowboard Pipe: Perhaps the most popular, definitely the most ballyhoo’ed by ESPN, this year’s comp was like most others of recent years, in that Shaun White won. He wore a leather jacket and looked a little bit foolish, but he won and that’s that.

Snowboard Worst Person: Why has Sal Masekala been doing the X Games for so long? How did he even get started? He’s been doing it for years, but still doesn’t know the difference between a front board, front blunt or back tail…it’s all crazy knuckle-draggers sliding stuff backwards to him!
