Spring in the Sierra

A few late season storms rolled through the Sierras over the last week, and our West Coast correspondants have been buzzing all week about late season powder runs, postponed contests, and extended seasons. Here’s a quick recap of what has been going down all over the left coast.

Last weekend Bear Mountain hosted the unusually early Grenade Games and while it’s nice to see the event on April 20th, it was good to see everyone in good spirits with Clayton and the boys. It also seemed like the proximity to all the industry people in Southern California brought in a good crowd, either that or the 7-Eleven sponsorship. Transworld has all the details and photo galleries.

Heading up the 395, if you know the area, Mammoth Mountain is the next stop and last weekend was supposed to host the Roxy Chicken Jam. Usually a beacon of warm weather and Ford Models, this year’s only all-female contest in America was snowed out by the late season blizzard. They were able to run a pipe contest without the top names, but every still enjoyed the powder jam and the live music in the Village.

Lake Tahoe also got themselves some goods, and record snowfalls around the pond have extended seasons for most resorts. Squaw is now open until May 30th—and if you’ve ever caught a sunny day poolside at the the top the tram then you know this is a good sign. Northstar has April 24 circled for their last day, Heavenly hasn’t said anything, but that’s probably because they’re concentrated on making Spring Loaded (which they stole from Killington, but we’ll let it slide) a success, and if it’s anything like last year it comes highly recommended.

So while you’re tightening your trucks, or buy new boardies…remember that there’s still snow out there, and it ain’t over til Oprah sings.
