We know what you think about Wrigleyville, and for the most part, it’s true. Bars for people who like bud light, drunk bro’s and awesome drunk hi-heel wipeouts – and that’s on a random Tuesday. We know the rep this neighborhood has and we deal with it in person on the daily, however, the truth is – it’s really not that bad.

If you come to our neighborhood on St. Patrick’s Day, you will see a domestic dispute inside Jimmy Johns, a drunk dude slap-fight and maybe even transvestite or two, all at 2:15 in the afternoon. But let’s be real, St. Patty’s Day can get weird anywhere. The day to day however, is oddly normal – and much better than the once a month visitor could understand.

We’re going to give you some insider info about our ‘hood so you might enjoy it a little better next time you visit. In no particular order, we love the following:

Wrigley Field

It’s older than anyone you know and literally crumbling to pieces as we speak. Show some respect for the elderly. There are not many original baseball stadiums left in the world, it’s a place you should see – at least once in your life, grab a dog and an Old Style and watch the Cubs lose.

Strange Cargo

Good news, the best t-shirt store in the country is right here in your city. Every screen print that is worth being put on a t-shirt is available in this store. Dig thru books with tons of options for music, sports, beer and much more. Do they have a “sorry for partying” tee? Yes. Do they have a special edition St. Patrick’s Day “where ‘da gold at?” tee? Yes. They also have some great vintage apparel, vans shoes, and much more. Go see them, pick a fun t-shirt and watch your day get better right before your eyes. http://www.strangecargo.com/

L&L Tavern

If you look up “Dive Bar” in the dictionary, a picture of L&L comes up. No fluff, no fancy bathrooms, just a damn good old bar. 3207 N. Clark St. (Clark & Belmont)

Sundays at Redmonds

Karaoke night. I hate doing (and listening) to karaoke the majority of the time. However, a bar that has some serious gangster rap in their karaoke machine, is okay with me. Recently, a Redmond’s employee got on the mic and busted out “Contagious” by R. Kelly and the Isley Brothers. Need I say more? http://www.bar1events.com/redmonds/index.php

Blokes and Birds

The most “non-wrigleyville” bar in wrigleyville. The neighborhood was very excited when these guys moved in.  An impressive drink list with stuff we can’t even pronounce and a downstairs pool table equals a solid evening in the ‘hood. http://blokesbirdschicago.com/

Cassava

Once we discovered this place, it was over. I’m pretty sure our staff is paying a good chunk of their rent on a monthly basis. Gluten Free hand-made empanadas, delicious chili, amazing fruit smoothies – all in this tiny little cafe with comfy seating and a great big window for some good people watching. I highly recommend the roasted  veggie empanada and strawberry banana smoothie. (strawberry banana is not on the menu but if you ask they will make it, and it’s amazing.) http://www.cassavachicago.com/

Wednesdays at Houndstooth

Normally a country bar, Houndstooth switches things up mid-week gets real hood with some southern goodness like Goodie Mob, UGK and Nappy Roots. Get a 40 with a coozie for a minimal fee, enjoy some delicious bar grub (the chicken quesadillas are a big hit) and hear some really good music. http://www.houndstoothsaloon.com/

So, next time you end up in the ‘ville by accident, stop by one of these gems and you might bump into one of the Windward crew.
