How to Size and Cut Your SUP Paddle

Have a brand new ‘uncut’ paddle and looking to get it fit for your personal size? It really is quite easy. We will take you through all the steps on how to size and cut an SUP paddle for the perfect fit.

Sizing your SUP paddle for the perfect fit can differ depending on the type of riding you are looking to do. Generally, you might want to go 8-10″ longer than the instructions here if you are looking to race or get into high cadence paddling. You can also checkout our page on understanding stand up paddles for more information on how SUP paddles work.

How to size and cut your sup paddle

Tools:

  • heat gun
  • small cup
  • mixing stick
  • epoxy
  • painters tape
  • hack saw

Step 1: finding the length

  • Hold your arm above your head.
  • Mark on the paddle where the wrist bends.
  • If you don’t have the handle in the paddle when you do this, subtract 3 inches from your measurement to account for the handle length.

Step 2: cutting the paddle

  • Use the hack saw to cut along your marked line.

Step 3: attaching the handle

  • First tape the handle so the epoxy doesn’t dry to it. The tape prevents the epoxy from getting on the paddle but also prevents splintering.
  • Using sand paper to scuff up the inside of the paddle allowing for better bonding. Then apply the epoxy and push the handle into place. Face the handle square with the blade with the inside of the handle grip face down.
  • To be safe, allow 12-24 hours to dry.

Step 4: seam seal the handle to the shaft

  • When dry peal of tape and excess epoxy
  • Use the heat gun to shrink the seam seal to the paddle.
