Health Benefits of SUP

There are many reasons why stand-up paddleboarding has grown in popularity over the past few years. For one, it’s a relatively simple activity and great for all ages. Another reason, though, is that it is a great way to get a full-body workout while also cultivating mental and emotional wellness. If you feel stuck in the same routine, change it up by grabbing a paddleboard and getting on the water. Here are a few benefits that SUP has to offer.

It gives you a full-body workout.

Even if you’re taking a leisurely paddle around the lake, you are working muscles from your shoulders to your toes. Your core and legs are engaged keeping you balanced while your arms and back muscles get a workout from paddling, especially in choppier waters. SUP is a low-impact activity, so even if you are recently injured or have sensitive joints, this is still something that you can easily participate in.

It also allows you to target specific areas.

Along with getting a well-rounded workout, there are many different ways to exercise with your board, whether you’re craving intense cardio or want something at a slower pace. Paddling rougher waters will mainly work your core and legs. Smooth water paddling also works these areas, plus it provides you an opportunity to try other forms of exercise from your board. Paddleboard yoga has become popular because you can increase your flexibility and balance on your board with a variety of poses and slow movements. However, you can also use your board for push ups, crunches, squats and other strength-building moves.

It gets you outside.

This is a simple point, but paddleboarding forces you to get outside and away from your computer screen, which has positive effects both physically and mentally. It’s a great way to soak up vitamin D and get some fresh air into your lungs. It’s also a great excuse to explore new places near and far from the Great Lakes to a hidden pond. If you enjoy yoga, paddleboarding allows you to take it out of the house or studio and onto the water for more fresh air and relaxation.

It reduces stress.

Speaking of relaxation, it’s no wonder that paddleboard meditation has become increasingly popular. Being outside on the water and away from other people gives you space to get back in tune with yourself and nature. Exercising on your board releases endorphins which also helps you feel happier. Whether taking it slow or getting a morning workout in, spending some time on the water will help you have a more optimistic outlook for the rest of the day.

This summer, grab a board, get out on the water and experience some of the amazing health benefits that paddleboarding has to offer. It’s a great way to get out of the gym and find some peace out on the water.
