The History of Hurley

Hurley’s history traces back to the surf scene in Southern California in the late 1970’s when Bob Hurley in Costa Mesa, California created Hurley Surfboards in 1979. Throughout the 1980’s Hurley Surfboards was expanding as a company. They linked up with an up and coming brand, Billabong and created Billabong USA . By the mid 1980’s, Hurley had full control over design, sourcing, marketing and financing of Billabong USA.

In the mid 1990’s the Billabong USA team noticed a swing in consumer preference and found that the modern surfer was also into, skate fashion, music and art. Since the company was at the end of a license agreement and at a new concept for the future, Bob and his team decided to launch their own company Hurley in 1999.

Hurley has thrived since with deep roots in the surf industry. The brand has since won “Boardshort of the Year” award for the Phantom boardshorts 4 years running!

The snow, skate, sup industry has always been something I've surrounded myself with. I absolutely love the community that comes with it, how it embodies action sports, fashion, music and having a good time all in one. I'm happy to have worked in the industry for many years now and I consider myself a reflection of the industry and love learning/teaching others about how super sweet it is.
