Very comfortable, not too loose, not too tight. Right amount of pockets. Very warm. *Size reference= I wear a 38X30 in jeans, I oredered an XL in these. PERECT !!!!!
My 2nd pair of these pants, at about $50 bucks, there isn't a better deal on a great pair of pants! I've worn them down to -15 fat bike rides (with a base layer underneath), awesome cool weather pants!

These pants are awesome, i have worn them a lot and they do a great job of keeping me warm, i have room for layers or just wear a pair of bike shorts underneath. I will use these for xc skiing as well.

BEST ANSWER:I have a 33-34" waist and I wear a large and it works fine with some layers underneath, so I would say probably a medium if he is going to layer anything under them.
