After you’ve picked out your paddleboard, you’ll need to decide on the right SUP Paddle. It might seem pretty straightforward, but the weight, stiffness, and shape of the paddle play a key roll in your overall SUP experience. It just depends on what type of stand up paddle boarding you want to do.
Typically, a paddle should be about 8” to 10” taller than you. The shorter paddles are best for beginners, but they are also good for moving around on rough water like rivers. The longer paddles will give you a bit more torque in the water and best for touring and general fitness.
For beginners, a medium-sized blade would be good. The smaller blades are good for doing more turns. They’re also easier to stroke. But of course, that means less power and speed. That’s where the larger blade paddles come in. If you’re looking for more zip or paddling surf, you might consider the larger SUP paddles.
The final thing to consider when buying a paddle is the material, which comes down to weight and stiffness. The lighter the paddle, the easier it is to paddle. Aluminum paddles are low priced, but a bit heavier than the fiberglass or carbon fiber. Carbon SUP Paddles are also the stiffest, so you get more out of each stroke.
