In 1923, the sleepy town of Straubing, Germany, became something else entirely. No longer was it just another small town; it became a name on the world map when Volkl started manufacturing skiing equipment. And even today, Volkl has chosen to keep that first factory in Straubing and continue to produce high quality, well-fabricated skis, ski packages
, and accessories.
The founder, Franz Volkl, took his father's carriage company and shaped it into his own vision when he produced his first set of skis, known as the Vostra. He had seen skiing in the Scandinavian countries and when he came back to Germany, a spark went alight. Franz wanted to produce his own skis with flair of German craftsmanship upon them. By the time he passed the factory onto his son, Franz Volkl Jr., he had taught his boy the meaning of putting quality, pride, and craftsmanship into everything manufactured. Franz Jr. would go on with his father's visions in his heart as well.
likes to be ahead of their competitors. Like a downhill ski racing champ, Volkl constantly seeks new ways to make themselves a little faster, a little better, a little steadier, and a little more maneuverable. In 1970, Volkl created the first fully fiberglass ski, lightening the weight as well as making the sport more accessible to all people. The company continued to innovate by introducing the Motion Binding System, giving skiers a lighter, floating sensation when skiing over powder, along with even better performance than before in softer snow. Volkl also introduced the first skis designed for women, and since then, has continued to innovate and change the industry and how skiing is viewed by people around the world. In fact, rather recently, Volkl upgraded its Motion Binding System to the newer, enhanced Piston Motion system.
Those innovations themselves are driven by Volkl's love of competition. The Volkl Ski Racing Team features athletes such as Jens Byggmark and Andrea Fischbacher. To have an edge on their competitors, their skiers need their equipment to be the absolute best when it comes to features, craftsmanship, and reliability. The research and design put into each ski and each piece of gear for the professional athlete is reflected in every single one of Volkl's skis and accessories. After hundreds of prototypes have been tested, 125 different steps achieved, and over 50 different parts assembled, each pair of Volkl skis receives the brand's iconic double-V, or chevron, logo.
German innovation and engineering has certainly produced fast, luxurious cars and fine brews, but never forget: it has also held true in producing the world's finest skis. That's Volkl.
