There are many ways to stroll the boardwalk in style but one of the most popular and enjoyable is the beach cruiser.

Beach cruiser bikes can be easily recognized for their balloon tires, upright seating style and single speed drivetrain. These features, combined with a heavier weight, tend to make the bicycles ride slower, perfect for leisurely rides down an oceanfront boardwalk. Beach cruisers are also great for vacationers and casual cycling along city streets or down country roads. However, they are best suited to flat terrain due to the weight and single speed. In other words, save the bike trip through the Rockies for your mountain bike!

Cruisers were originally made popular in the early 1930′s, after being modeled after the motorcycles of the time, and enjoyed peak popularity in the 1950′s before giving way to imported bikes with lighter weight and shifting gears. The new bikes of the 1960′s and ’70s gave riders greater performance capability and led to the mountain bikes and street racers of today.  In the mid-1990′s, beach cruiser bikes caught a resurgence in popularity, especially along the West Coast, where the green movement and health craze began. Today, cruisers are loved for their retro design, comfortable ride and affordability.

So if you’re looking for a fun way to enjoy the summer beaches or just a new hobby, try out a beach cruiser! Not sure where to start? Check out the Johnny Loco Dutch Delight which features a front carrier for all your stuff or the Johnny Loco Londoner, which features a cross between the modern cruiser and Dutch bike for elegant styling and a smooth ride.
